Shopping Experience : People Tree

The Company

People Tree is arguably the most well known of the UK-based ethical fashion brands we have purchased from. Founded and led by Safia Minney it has won numerous ethical and fashion awards including the Most Sustainable Fashion Brand at the Global Fashion Awards in 2010.

Safia Minney has been made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in recognition of her role within Fair Trade fashion.

People Tree aims to be 100% fair trade throughout their supply chain and their 2014 spring summer collection carries the brand new WFTO (World Fair Trade Organisation) Product Label which communicates that they are committed to Fair Trade throughout the supply chain from “production to sale“.

Some well known people model and design for People Tree. In 2011 Emma Watson, of Harry Potter fame, designed and modelled a collection, and more recently fashion designer Zandra Rhodes.

Saffia Minney takes some of their designers and models to India to see the difference that fair trade fashion makes.

People Tree make a huge effort to understand the needs of their suppliers. One such need which they have responded to is the need for paying the suppliers 50% advance payments, without which their workers and their suppliers wouldn’t get paid on time.

The Experience

As with some of the other companies we have purchased from, People Tree provide their customers with information on who made their clothes.

We love this.

They go further than many and even introduce us to the companies from which they source their cotton.

Their range of women’s clothes and accessories is extensive, which although doesn’t help us three guys much it is great to see! We were informed that demand for their men’s clothes is lower than the women’s ranges however they do have a selection of t-shirts, jumpers, trousers, and shirts.

Between us we have bought a shirt and a jumper reduced to £32 and £37 respectively. The fit and style of these items are what we were looking for. Returning unwanted items is straightforward using Royal Mail or Collect Plus.

The website is easy to navigate and for people who prefer buying from a physical shop they have an extensive list of UK and International stockists on their website.

The Verdict

One of the clear leaders in fair trade fashion and a go-to brand for many. We would definitely buy from them again and have recommended them to many of our female friends due to the extensive range of women’s wear.
